Babies are beautiful blessings. Perfect little beings of joy. So when something takes a turn and you know your baby bear’s health is off, nothing could be worse for a parent than not knowing what their baby bear needs to get their health back on track.
“Stay calm and snuggle on” is a great motto but even I - a mom with medical training - tend to freak out when my babies aren’t feeling well.
Then I take a deep breath and check my baby’s built-in communication system. Yes, the human body is an amazing machine and babies have some very unique, built-in indicators that tell us what they need since they can’t do so with words.
How to Tell How Serious Your Toddler’s Illness Is
Infants and up, until around age two or three, will have a blue vein become present along their index finger when they fall ill. The finger has three sections. Depending on what section the blue vein is showing up in on the side of your baby’s index finger (check the index finger on the side closest to their thumb), you can gauge the severity of your baby’s illness. Think of it as your baby’s health-o-meter.
If you see a blue vein that crosses the first crease and goes into the first section, the proximal section or the part closest to the hand, then your baby is going to be just fine. No need to fret. This is a ‘this too shall pass’ moment. This crease of the baby’s index finger is known in Chinese Medicine as the Wind Gate. Proper prompt treatment will lead to a complete resolution of the illness within minutes to hours.
If the blue vein extends past the second crease and into the middle section of the finger, then you ought to monitor your baby very closely. This is the time to be concerned yet calm. This crease of the baby’s index finger is known in Chinese Medicine as the Qi Gate. Proper prompt treatment at this point can lead to complete resolution within a couple of days or less.
Hopefully, the blue vein never extends past the third crease and into the tip of your baby’s finger. This crease of the baby’s index finger is known in Chinese Medicine as the Life Gate. If you see a blue vein extend across this crease get emergency medical care ASAP! Your baby’s life is in critical danger and you need to act quickly and calmly.
Homeopathy for Your Home and Family
Homeopathy is a vibrational medicine system in which extremely diluted amounts of certain natural substances are used to treat ailments. Homeopathy is based upon the theory that ‘like cures like’.
It’s very easy and safe to administer homeopathy to infants, toddlers and children all the way through to the elderly. It can even benefit some of our family pets, like horses, cats and dogs.
A very small dose can make a huge difference in a short amount of time. Homeopathy has been a phenomenal help in our home.
Hyland’s is a great brand to use with infants, toddlers, young children or the elderly. Why? Because they are a softer tablet that gently melts in the mouth. No risk of choking. The Hyland’s Kids’ Kit is a great starting place. We have used each and every one of the 6 remedies in this kit on numerous occasions (Arnica Montana 30x, Belladonna 30x, Ferrum Phos. 30x, Aconitum Napellus 30x, Hepar Sulph Calc. 30x, Chamomillia 30x and Bumps ‘n Bruises Ointment).
I like Boiron for adults and children who are not going to choke, though we have used Boiron with our babies with no complications at all. Look for the blue tube, though they also make several of the remedies like Arnica in green (6x) and purple (200c) tubes. Both brands are high quality and trustworthy.
Once you administer the correct homeopathic remedy (there is a little booklet that guides you to the proper choice in the Hyland’s Kids’ Kit), you will see improvement quickly. Check your baby’s index finger to make sure the blue vein has receded back to normal stable health status.
Sidenote: if you administer a remedy that is not the correct one it will not help your baby heal back to perfect health but it also will not hurt your baby. This is hugely important to know. Homeopathy will heal and does not hurt.
One day, my little brother did not have adult eyes on him and he decided to break into the medicine cabinet and down almost every homeopathy remedy my mom had on hand which was about 100 or so… and he was fine. No negative result. No tummy ache. No diarrhea. Nothing. He was completely fine. It did teach my mom to move the medicine cabinet to a less accessible area of our family home and perhaps watch my little brother a bit more closely but that was all that came from that experience.
What to Do if Homeopathy Isn’t Working?
Lancets are amazing little devices (a lancet is a pointed piece of surgical steel encased in plastic, used to puncture the skin). These days you can buy diabetic lancets almost anywhere (this is the only good thing about diabetes being such a prevalent American disease) and it’s well worth keeping a box of them in your home for too high of a fever, asthmatic breathing and many other ills and ailments because you just never know. You will also want to keep a SHARPS container for the disposal of used lancets which are also readily available at almost any walk in pharmacy these days.
Treating a High Fever
If your baby breaks into a too high of a fever and for some reason the homeopathy you have on hand in not correcting the issue, this is the time to do a little prick to release a tiny drop of blood from the apex of your baby’s ear.
You can find the apex of the ear by folding the ear forwards, in half vertically. The apex is the top center point. This point is named Erjian or Tip of the Ear.
Before you prick to bleed, check to see if one ear is redder than the other or has more veins showing. If so, prick that ear. If not, choose one ear to prick.
Squeeze just below the area you are going to prick and hold for a few seconds to congest the blood. If you’re doing it right, the area should turn a deep red. This step is extremely important. Doing it correctly will cause there to be little to no pain with the quick prick of the lancet. You will also get a better blood release which will result in healing quicker from the illness.
Once a drop, or few, of blood is released from the apex of the ear, your baby’s high fever will start dropping immediately and will cause no pain to your baby when done correctly. Dispose of the used lancet in your SHARPS container.
Treating Wheezing In Your Infant
Your baby’s airways are much narrower than yours. When they get an infection, the heat and inflammation causes their airways to constrict. As a result, it is very easy for them to have wheezing or difficulty inhaling when they get ill.
If your baby is wheezing, prick the blue vein on the thumb-side of the index finger (the blue vein we just discussed above). Make sure to choke off the vein first on the index finger before pricking. Once one to a few blood drops are released, your baby’s breathing should start to return to normal immediately.
One afternoon, out of the blue, our first born son woke up from a nap crying with an extremely high fever and an intense wheezing when he was just a year old. I could tell he was struggling to breathe. I checked his index finger and yes the vein just crossed the Wind Gate. I grabbed a diabetic lancet, choked off the area of his little finger and did a quick prick to bleed of the vein and then applied the same technique to the apex of his ear. He didn’t flinch but looked relieved. A few drops of blood were released from both points and his breathing and temperature went back to normal in less than 15 minutes. The blue vein line reversed back to healthy status and the wheezing did not return. After a brief mama bear cry, I thanked GOD for my training and the beautiful simplicity of this system and how it can be applied and managed at home safely and on a budget. So happy my baby bear was back to his happy healthy self and we could all sleep soundly that night.
